Chattri Memorial Service – Sunday 9th June 2019 at 2.30 pm. at the Chattri, Patcham

Dear Friends of the Chattri On behalf of the Chattri Memorial Group, I should like to invite you to a Memorial Service, in remembrance of the Indian Soldiers who were cremated in Brighton during the First World War. Some 12,000 troops were brought over from the Western Front and hospitalised in Brighton to recover from their wounds. The memorial is unique and the commemoration is believed to be the only one of its kind in Britain. The Service will take place on Sunday 9th June 2018 at 2.30 pm. at the Chattri, Patcham, Standen Lane, Brighton, BN1 8ZB. Prayers and the laying of the wreaths should last for approximately half an hour. Cars are able to drive right up to the Chattri across the fields on this day. Please be aware that the farmland surrounding the Memorial is uneven so therefore take the necessary steps to keep yourself safe. Seating is limited and if required, please bring your own foldable chair. There are no facilities available, nor any cover at the venue. Everyone is most welcome. In addition, I have been able to negotiate entry to the Royal Pavilion on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th at half- price local residents’ rate. The Royal Pavilion was one of the three hospitals where some of the soldiers convalesced and a room is dedicated to reflect this period of its history. Visitors attending the ceremony will just need to quote the word “Chattri” on arrival at the ticket office. Details for the Royal Pavilion can be found on their website: http://brightonmuseums.org.uk Following the Ceremony, refreshments will be served at Dorothy Stringer School, Loder Road, BN1 6PZ. An exhibition which traces the role of the soldiers from India to the Western Front will be on display at the school. I look forward to your presence at the Chattri and I hope you be able to attend with your family and friends.  I would be very grateful if you would kindly pass on this email to your contacts. With best wishes Davinder Dhillon Chair Chattri Memorial Group

A Time to Mourn and A Time to Dance 18th Nov @ BrightonStMary 61 St James’s Street, BN2 1PR Brighton

The Brighton Chamber Ensemble along with St Mary’s Church, Kemptown are putting on a event on 18th November to mark 100 years since the end of the Great War. Given the number of Indian soldiers who spent time at the Brighton Pavilion while they were treated for their wounds, we would be particularly pleased and honoured if members of the Gujarati Cultural Society were able to attend. The event (which is free) is a mix of music, readings and poetry. We are delighted that singer and sitar player, Debipriya Sircar will be performing. However, we are still looking for someone to read a short account written by an Indian soldier of his experience of the war, so if you have someone who would be willing to do that, please let me know. Here is a link to the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/528445454241905/ An afternoon of music, history and poetry commemorating the men and women who died in the Great War and those who mourned them in Brighton and beyond. An event that reflects the truly global nature of the war and the suffering endured by people of so many different countries. With organ and chamber music by Edward Elgar, Rebecca Clarke, Nikolai Myaskovsky and Erich Korngold played by members of the Brighton Chamber Ensemble and friends, and Indian sitar music by special guest, Debipriya Sircar.
